Radar reflectors in general

Radar reflectors reflect radar beams from other vessels’ radars, making your boat appear to be a larger and a more consistent target. If you operate your boat in areas with vessel traffic, or where fog and poor visibility are present, the ability to be seen by radar-equipped vessels can make the difference between being seen and a collision.

Functionality 3Lenzz

The 3Lenzz radar reflector is essentially different from other reflectors. The design is extremely compact.

The 3 chambers each contain one Lüneburg sphere arranged at an angle of 120° to each other. This type of reflectors have no loss of performance when the boat is in a slanting position, for example, under sail, or rolling in a heavy swell.

Conventional radar reflectors, such as the classic rain catcher, when aligned exactly vertical, have a strong reflective surface that exceeds the 3Lenzz radar reflector in strength and width. If these types of reflectors have an elevation (slant) their performance decreases rapidly.

Therefore, the 3Lenzz radar reflector is very suitable for use on sailing yachts.

Features

The radar reflector 3Lenzz is a compact reflector. The 3Lenz has Lüneburg lenses arranged at an angle of 3×120°, which still reliably reflect the radar beams even when the yacht heels.

  • Functional principle: Lüneberg lens (multi-stepped)
  • Dimensions: (30 x 30 x 15 cm)
  • Weight: 2,5 kg
  • Well suited for sailing yachts – low reflection losses when heeling or rolling.

  • Outer material: ABS with UV stabilizer
  • Color: light gray (aluminum gray)
Includes 2 pole mounts in aluminum.
Mounting on motorboats is also possible via the 3/4 male thread.

Mounting

We recommend installation by a qualified service company. With an aluminum mast, you should always use suitable blind rivets to avoid damaging cordage or cables running in the mast. Mounting is best done on a lying mast or with a mounting platform.
Mount the 3Lenzz at a height of at least 5 meters above the water surface. If the mast is standing, we recommend preparing the mast holders at the bottom of the deck. To avoid damaging or scratching the mast, it is recommended to temporarily apply adhesive tape here for protection. Always use both mounting brackets. Secure the 3/4 threaded sleeves with a screw locking adhesive, such as (Loctite).
Always attach the 3Lenzz to the front of the mast.
For carbon masts, we strongly recommend contacting a professional rigger or the mast manufacturer to avoid irreparable damage to the mast.
When mounting the 3Lenzz, always make sure that it is not in, or in the direct vicinity of, the beam range of any radar equipment on board. Mounting directly above or below a radar unit is possible

Notice:

A radar reflector is no guarantee of being seen by other vessels. It is exclusively another nautical navigation tool as an aid to avoid collisions on the water! An AIS does not replace a radar reflector.
